Joshy's 25!!!!

My oldest son Josh (aka Joshy) turned 25 on August 1st. This sounds so ridiculous to me...my first born is now 25? In honor of my Joshy let me tell you a little bit about him:
When Josh was born he was HUGE!! I have to be honest and tell you I was a little upset that he was SO BIG! I wanted a newborn for my first baby. But out pops Joshy looking like a 6 month old already. He weighed almost 9 pounds and had a full head of curly black hair (I had to give him a haircut the day I brought him home.) He didn't have the wobbly little newborn head and was as strong as an ox. He'd lift his head up curiously looking through the clear hospital baby bin, checking out all the puny babies surrounding him. He seemed to know that he was already stronger and more coordinated...starting life out ahead of the pack.

Josh excelled at every sport- soccer, football, baseball, and track. Wait a minute...I have to add basketball to the list! The one time he decided to try out for basketball in Jr. High School, even though he'd never played before...he made it! To top it off, he helped his team make school history by beating a rival private school which they'd never done before. They pulled off the huge upset in the final seconds of the game when Josh stoled the ball, passed it to his teammate who threw it up for 3 points at the buzzer to beat the then undefeated team by 1 point. The following year, they did not invite our Jr. High to their tournament.
Josh had an easy going, whatever attitude about his ability. He never was one to show off or talk himself up. He just knew that once he stepped onto the field, track, or court...his abilities would speak for himself. Coaches loved him. They all tried to get Josh on their teams and all star teams. One year during baseball season, Josh was a pitcher. We had gone away on vacation during a holiday break and I decided to work with him on his pitching. He threw sidearm. It was incredibly fast and accurate, but I was worried that he'd blow his arm out throwing that way, so I tried to break his habit. We worked and worked at it, until he no longer pitched sidearm. Well, when we got back, his pitches weren't as fast anymore and the coaches asked me, "What'd you do?" OOPS! Well, the team then got the BEST and FASTEST center fielder they'd ever seen. The coach knew that anything hit into the outfield would be caught. Not to mention his incredible bat speed where he hit homerun after homerun! He was a superstar! One All Star game, Josh was flying all around the field catching the right and left fielders balls as well as his own. I was so embarrassed, wondering what he was doing. It wasn't until after the game that he told me, "Mom, the coach told me he wanted to win and that it was a big game so I needed to catch ALL the balls I could get to even if it went to right and left field." Well there you have it. I bet the coach had no idea that with Josh's speed...there was no where on that field that he couldn't get too. THEY WON OF COURSE!

In track he broke the Frosh/Soph school record in the 400 meter. He was placed on the Varsity team as a freshman after an incredible "heart" performance in his very first meet. He was running the anchor leg (4th) on the Freshman relay team. His team was so far behind it looked hopeless by the time he received the baton. Then he did the impossible. He needed to catch the leader who was already 200+ meters ahead of him. He took off and slowly began to catch him. By the time they reached the final 50 meters, Josh and the leader were now neck in neck. The crowd was screaming. His coaches and team mates were running alongside yelling and cheering. No one could believe that he'd actually caught the leader and had a chance to win. As they reached the finish line, Josh pulled ahead and the other boy's legs gave out and he fell from trying to hold him off. Josh crossed the finish line...victorious.
His sophomore year, he and his relay teammates traveled to compete against the best of the best in Texas in the 4x400m relay teams. They were also invited to the top in the nation, elite, Arcadia Invitational Night meet and went on to win CIF and compete in the state meet. He showed not only his natural talent & speed but also his heart.
BEST OF THE BEST AT THE TEXAS MEET
During his freshman football season, the coaches decided to move him from running back to wide receiver. He looked more like a wide receiver and the coaches thought they could utilize his speed better at that position. He also played corner on defense. After the summer passing league, Josh no longer was enjoying football because he didn't like playing wide receiver and he was ready to quit. He knew he was a running back. He loved that position and had played it his whole life. The coaches talked to him and agreed to rotate him in at running back and start him at corner. In the very first game against San Clemente, Josh didn't get one single carry in the first half of the game, they used another running back instead. Our team was down at the half, 21-0. During the second half kick off, Josh caught the ball and ran it back for a 98 yard touchdown. The next offensive play they put him in at running back. On the first handoff, they pitched it to him. He hit the corner and was gone...80 yard touchdown! He proceeded to score two more additional touchdowns and we won! He set a freshman rushing record with over 1,000+ yards rushing. His senior football season was filled with disappointment when he tore his MCL on the very first kick off return against San Clemente. His team ended up having a great season, and he learned the important role of being a supportive teammate on the sidelines. Trying to lift others up even though he was unable to be on the field to help them.
Josh has had his share of ups and downs, as we all have, and yet, he continues to hit life running. He's learned to weather life's storms, to keep pushing forward and to never give up on a dream. I know that all of his past experiences and the lesson he's learned growing up playing sports has served to show him that no matter what happens...don't quit, the breakthrough is coming.
Josh's birth changed my life! I was blessed with a healthy boy who I love with all my heart (more than I ever thought possible.) As he grew, I wanted him to know that no matter what kind of frustration, anger, disappointment or hurt, he experienced, I would ALWAYS be there for him with unconditional love and encouragement.
I am so proud of Josh for his quiet determination. His perseverance and will to continue to go after what he wants in life. I can't wait to see all that he achieves in his life! The Lord truly blessed me and gave me an amazing gift...my Joshy!
HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY JOSH! I love you with all my heart and I am so grateful to call you my son!!!

Where Have the Days Gone

I can't believe my last post was on the 27th...yikes. i'm really slacking. To say that I've been a little overwhelmed lately would be an understatement. Hmmm let's see, where do I start? On Thursday my son didn't play in the JV football game (he was playing in the varsity game on Friday-woo hoo!), but I made a commitment to take pictures for the team so I still went. Friday my son got to run the ball a couple of times in the Varsity game, we were hoping for a little more, but it was a tight game, 7-0 & he's only a sophomore (can't be greedy right?!) We won!

Saturday I had a photo shoot for a property management co. who wanted pictures of their buildings/landscape (10 of them). I headed out early, but was only able to complete 5 of them & I was exhausted (had to walk these huge buildings, working the angles & trying to get the best possible shots). The pictures came out great, it had just finished raining & there was huge puffy white clouds with crisp clear blue sky as the backdrop.

Sunday our friend's son had a football championship game, stopped by there for a little while then headed to the high school to make signs, candy bags, posters etc for the kids (BIG rival football game this week. it's a tradition.) Straight from there I headed off for my second group of building shots...NOT happy with the results because I got such a late start. The sun was in the complete worst spot~probably have to redo them, uggggh (4 hrs wasted)!

Today I have to get the pictures from 2 weeks worth of games out & the first set of buildings cropped & edited.

I'm feeling a little bogged down, but I know I'll get through it all...breathe!

Edison vs. Servite CIF Championship Game

Tonight is the big night...we play Servite for the CIF Pac 5 Championship at Angels Stadium at 7:30. It will also be shown on Primeticket, but we'll be there! We've had a great season, UNDEFEATED.

I feel bad for Jullien, he should have been in this graduating class but I started him in school when he was 4. He constantly lets me know it too! Last year he received 1st Team All Sunset League Linebacker and had an amazing season. He said, "Imagine how good I could've been if I had one more year with the kids my own age." Last year he missed the last game, which we lost to Esperanza, due to a concussion. It was the worst possible thing...5 way Sunset League tie for 1st place. They pulled names out of the hat and we were not picked to go to CIF playoffs. It was devastating for the seniors! It's sad to see them at the games this year...just dreaming about what could've been last year.

It's going to be a tough game. Even though we handed Servite their only loss this year, they're going to be ready. The thing that worries me is the rain. My oldest son, Josh was on the 2006 Edison team that went to the CIF Championship game by defeating Servite twice to get there. The problem in that CIF game, which we lost lost to Orange Lutheran...R A I N!

We are a passing team. This presents a lot of opportunity for errors when it's raining. Servite has a quarterback who scrambles...makes it a little easier for them. This year however, Edison has so many weapons. They mixed in the Wildcat offense to throw our opponents off in a couple games. It worked! This may be a great alternative for Edison this year if we run into the same problem as the 2006 team. It will be the first CIF championship for Edison since 1985. I know the boys can pull it off...we just need to continue with the same "Refuse to Lose" attitude.

**If you watch it on t.v., be sure to look for my stepson on the sidelines #26 (he's only a sophomore). During last weeks game he kept standing behind our quarterback, Matt Viles, every time the camera was around. We were teasing him and told him to make sure he waves to all his fans this game! He's no dummy, he knows the cameras are going to be on Viles & strategically positions himself...he loves attention!

High School Football Tickets on Craigs List?

It's been tough being consistent with updating my blog lately. With football season in full swing, I get writers block because all I can think about is football!

Oh speaking of football, did I tell ya that next week is a HUGE game for Edison H.S. Football? Ya well Freshman, JV & Varsity are all undefeated. We play our rival school Fountain Valley for the league championship.

The game was supposed to be at the local Junior College because it holds a larger capacity. However this year it completely sold out in 1 day! People are selling tickets for $30.00 or $40.00 on Craig's List. WHAT? Isn't that crazy?

They decided to move the venue to a larger stadium. It's now at Cal State Fullerton. They're selling tickets only to Edison students & the parents of students (tons of people couldn't get tix to watch their own son's play) I would love to hear if someone actually pays for those Craigs List tix when it gets close to game day because they couldn't get them anywhere else.

Anyways, to give you an idea of the stuff going on this next week to prepare. Tomorrow all of the parents meet to do posters, goody bags and clean & decorate the boys lockers (it's pretty gross!) Last year one of the boys had an old, smelly, moldy breakfast, not to mention the stench from their sweaty unwashed clothes! We bring tons of Lysol & fabric softner sheets to try to get rid of the smell!!

On Wed. the Freshman have a big dinner. JV/Varsity have theirs on Thursday. Then all the parents show up at the H.S. @ 2:00 A.M. (YES...I said 2:00 A.M., it's not a typo) on Friday morning to decorate every inch of the school with posters, balloons and signs along the street. It's a BIG tradition. It's not only for the championship, but also for the "BATTLE OF THE BELL". Which the winning school gets to keep for the whole year until the next match up. We've had it for the last 4 years.

It's going to be fun...I'll post pics. Also, they announced that they will broadcast the game live on the internet. I'll find the link and post it.

GO EDISON...BEAT FV!

Race For the Cure/Homecoming

We won the Varsity Football game and because it was such a HUGE match up, we were on the front page of the Orange County Register...YAY Chargers!

Homecoming was on Saturday and Elijah got to attend his first High School dance. Of course I had to annoy everyone with my endless pictures. Adam and Elijah wouldn't stop making their stupid faces. Then my husband stepped up to put the clamp on them.

Anthony threatened them (via the choke hold) and finally got some good pics

Then it was off for more pictures with all of the friends in front of the Hummer Limo (a.k.a. Pimp Mobile...LOL!)

These boys have known each other since they were 5 years old!

These were "friends"...but I think Elijah & the girl in the yellow like each other!

They had a good time, that's all they would tell me about the night...I'll need to do some snooping but I couldn't get any other info...I'll need to question their friends, they always give me details.

On Sunday my boss, Marsha, Marsha's sister & Eva and I all walked in the 5K Orange County Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure. I walked in honor of my friend Joanne Phillips who has been fighting breast cancer for 10 years. Stop by her Caring Bridge Website and read her amazing story.

The ladies in pink are the one's who are fighting breast cancer.

What an awesome experience...to see so many people stepping up to try and make a difference. If you want to do something like this in your area, click on the link above. Oh yeah, and don't worry, you don't have to be in great shape, we just walked at a medium pace. Most of us know someone personally who is fighting this and we CAN make a difference.
